ARM Migration
ELI5 - The Vibe Check
For decades, cloud servers mostly ran on Intel-style chips. Now cloud providers are pushing their own ARM-based chips, like AWS Graviton, that are often 20 to 40 percent cheaper and more power-efficient for the same work. ARM migration is the project of moving your workloads over to them, which sounds simple until you discover some dependency was quietly compiled assuming the old chip architecture the whole time.
Real Talk
ARM migration is the process of moving workloads from x86-64 to ARM-based CPU architectures (such as AWS Graviton, Azure Ampere Altra, or Apple Silicon in CI runners) to take advantage of better price-performance and lower power consumption. It requires multi-architecture container images, ARM-compatible native dependencies, and revalidated performance benchmarks, since some libraries and compiled binaries don't have ARM builds or behave subtly differently under ARM's memory model.
Show Me The Code
# Build a multi-arch image so it runs on both x86 and ARM
docker buildx build \
--platform linux/amd64,linux/arm64 \
-t myapp:latest --push .
When You'll Hear This
"We migrated the fleet to Graviton and cut compute costs by a third with no code changes." / "The ARM migration stalled because one native npm dependency had no arm64 build."
