Blame the Bot
ELI5 - The Vibe Check
The bug shipped, the standup starts, and someone says 'well, the AI wrote that part' in a tone that suggests the conversation is now over. Blaming the bot is the new 'it worked on my machine,' a way of technically admitting a mistake happened without admitting you approved it, reviewed it, and clicked merge.
Real Talk
Blaming the bot is a form of responsibility deflection where a developer attributes a bug or bad decision to the AI tool that generated the code, downplaying their own role in reviewing and approving it. Teams that take AI-assisted development seriously treat the human who merged the code as fully accountable, regardless of who typed it.
When You'll Hear This
"Don't blame the bot in the postmortem, you approved the PR." / "He tried to blame the bot but the commit has his name on it."
