Burnout
ELI5 - The Vibe Check
Burnout is what happens when I love building things quietly turns into I can't look at a keyboard without my stomach dropping, usually after months of crunch, on-call pages at 2am, and a backlog that grows faster than you can clear it. It's not laziness and it's not fixable with a ping-pong table, it's your brain and body sending an emergency signal that the pace was never sustainable in the first place.
Real Talk
Burnout is a state of physical and emotional exhaustion caused by prolonged, unmanaged workplace stress, characterized by the World Health Organization's definition as feelings of energy depletion, increased mental distance from one's job, and reduced professional efficacy. In software engineering it is commonly driven by chronic on-call load, unrealistic deadlines, constant context switching, and a lack of psychological safety, and unlike ordinary tiredness, it typically requires sustained time off and structural changes, not just a vacation, to recover from.
