Feature Creep
ELI5 — The Vibe Check
Feature creep is when a project starts as 'a simple to-do app' and slowly becomes 'a to-do app with social features, AI integration, real-time collaboration, offline mode, a marketplace, and cryptocurrency support.' Each feature seemed reasonable when it was added. Together, they form a bloated monster that does everything poorly and nothing well. The scope grew, and nobody noticed until it was too late.
Real Talk
Feature creep (also called scope creep or requirement creep) is the gradual, often uncontrolled expansion of a project's scope through the continuous addition of new features, requirements, or improvements. It's one of the most common causes of project delays and budget overruns. Preventing feature creep requires disciplined scope management, clear product vision, and the ability to say no.
When You'll Hear This
"Feature creep turned our 3-month project into an 18-month odyssey." / "Every 'quick addition' is feature creep in disguise."
