Impeller is Flutter's answer to the occasional stutter you'd get the first time an animation ran, back when Skia had to compile shaders on the fly mid-frame. Impeller precompiles everything ahead of time, so there's no surprise shader compilation hiccup waiting to ruin your smooth animation. It's Flutter trading a flexible renderer for a predictable one.

Real Talk

Impeller is Flutter's newer rendering engine, designed to replace Skia as the default renderer on iOS and increasingly other platforms. Unlike Skia, which compiles shaders lazily at runtime and can cause jank on first use, Impeller precompiles shaders ahead of time, aiming for consistently smooth frame rates without runtime shader compilation stalls.
