ELI5 - The Vibe Check
iOS is the operating system running on every iPhone and iPad, the walled garden where Apple controls the hardware, the software, and the app store all at once. Build an app for it and you're writing in Swift, submitting it through App Store Connect, and hoping Apple's review team doesn't reject it for a reason buried in a hundred thousand word guideline document.
Real Talk
iOS is Apple's mobile operating system, running exclusively on iPhone and, in a variant called iPadOS, on iPad. Native development uses Swift and UIKit or SwiftUI within Xcode, apps are distributed almost entirely through the App Store after passing Apple's review process, and the platform is known for tighter hardware and software integration and a stricter approval process than its main competitor, Android.
When You'll Hear This
"We're iOS-only for the beta, Android comes next quarter." / "That crash only happens on iOS 17, it never reproduces on Android."
