Model Monitoring
ELI5 - The Vibe Check
Model monitoring is refusing to treat we deployed the model as the finish line. Once a model is live, you keep watching its predictions, its inputs, and its actual real-world accuracy over time, because a model that was great on launch day can quietly get worse for months before anyone notices, unless someone's actually watching the dashboard.
Real Talk
Model monitoring is the ongoing practice of tracking a deployed model's inputs, outputs, and performance metrics in production to detect data drift, concept drift, degraded accuracy, or unexpected prediction distributions before they cause real business impact. It typically combines statistical drift detection with logged ground-truth comparisons where available, and feeds directly into decisions about when to retrain or roll back a model.
When You'll Hear This
"We added model monitoring so we'd know about accuracy decay before the support team started getting complaints." / "The monitoring dashboard flagged that predictions have skewed heavily toward one class over the last week."
