Nerd Snipe
ELI5 — The Vibe Check
Presenting someone with an interesting problem that's so fascinating they HAVE to solve it, even though they have actual work to do. Like dropping a brainteaser in Slack and watching three senior engineers lose their afternoon. Named after the XKCD comic.
Real Talk
Nerd sniping is the act of presenting a compelling intellectual challenge that derails someone from their current task. In software teams, it often manifests as interesting but non-urgent technical problems, architecture debates, or optimization puzzles that consume disproportionate attention.
When You'll Hear This
"Don't nerd snipe the team before a release." / "I got nerd sniped by a recursion problem and lost 4 hours."
