Overnight Refactor
ELI5 - The Vibe Check
You kick off a long-running agent task before you leave for the day, half-hoping and half-dreading what you'll find in the morning. The overnight refactor is that specific 8 a.m. feeling of opening your laptop to discover your codebase spent the night with someone else, and you genuinely don't know yet if that was a good idea.
Real Talk
An overnight refactor refers to a large-scale code change executed by an autonomous AI agent running unattended over an extended period, typically left running by a developer at the end of the day. It's enabled by increasingly long-running agentic tool-use loops, and it requires trusting checkpointing, tests, and rollback mechanisms enough to actually walk away.
When You'll Hear This
"I kicked off the overnight refactor before I left, fingers crossed for the morning." / "The overnight refactor touched every service, I'm reviewing it with coffee before I trust any of it."
