AWS makes deployment easy, but now you need IAM roles, VPC configs, CloudFormation templates, and a PhD in their pricing model. The platform saves you from building infrastructure. Then it charges you for the privilege of not understanding the infrastructure it built for you.

Platform tax refers to the accumulated cost of adopting a platform — including pricing premiums, vendor lock-in, required platform-specific knowledge, compliance with platform constraints, and the engineering effort needed to work within or around platform limitations. It applies to cloud providers (AWS, GCP), frameworks, SaaS tools, and app stores. The tax grows over time as migration becomes increasingly costly.
