Principal Engineer
ELI5 — The Vibe Check
The final boss of the individual contributor track. Principal engineers shape the technical direction of entire companies. They've been coding for so long they can smell bad architecture from three repos away. When a principal engineer says 'this won't scale,' you listen.
Real Talk
Principal engineer is typically the highest individual contributor engineering role. They set company-wide technical strategy, evaluate build-vs-buy decisions, lead critical migrations, and influence engineering culture. They often report directly to VP Engineering or CTO and work across all engineering teams.
When You'll Hear This
"The principal engineer vetoed the microservices migration — she was right." / "Principal is where you go when you love code more than management."
