Private Link
ELI5 - The Vibe Check
Normally, when your app talks to a managed cloud service, that traffic can hop out onto the public internet even if it never technically leaves the provider's building. Private Link creates a direct, private connection straight into that service using an internal IP address, so the traffic never touches the public internet at all. It's like having a private hallway between your office and the vendor's office instead of walking outside and back in through their front door.
Real Talk
Private Link (or its equivalents like AWS PrivateLink and Azure Private Link) provisions a private endpoint with an internal IP address inside your VPC that connects directly to a supported cloud service or another VPC's service, routing traffic entirely over the provider's private network rather than the public internet. Unlike VPC peering, it doesn't require route table changes or full network connectivity between VPCs, it exposes only the specific service, reducing attack surface and avoiding IP range overlap issues.
When You'll Hear This
"We put the database behind PrivateLink so it's reachable without ever touching a public IP." / "Private Link avoided the CIDR overlap headache that VPC peering would have caused."
