Prompt cargo cult is blindly copying prompt tricks because you saw them on Twitter — 'Think step by step', 'You are an expert', 'Take a deep breath' — without checking if they actually help your use case. Sometimes they do. Often they don't.

Prompt cargo culting is the uncritical application of prompt techniques based on social proof rather than empirical evaluation. Many famous 'prompt hacks' work on specific models or tasks but not universally, and frontier models may already internalize them. Prevention: always A/B test prompt changes against your own evals.
