Scale to Zero
ELI5 - The Vibe Check
Scale to zero means when literally nobody is using your service, it shrinks down to nothing and stops costing you money, then springs back to life the moment a request shows up. It's the opposite of the old always-on server humming away at 2am for no reason. Great for your wallet on low-traffic services, less great for the person who hits it first and has to wait for it to wake up.
Real Talk
Scale to zero is an autoscaling behavior where a service's running instance count drops to zero during idle periods, eliminating compute cost for unused capacity, and scales back up on the next incoming request. It's a defining feature of serverless platforms and serverless containers, and the tradeoff for the cost savings is a cold start on the first request after idling, which platforms mitigate with pre-warming or minimum instance settings.
When You'll Hear This
"Set min-instances to zero on the staging environment, nobody hits it overnight anyway." / "Scale to zero saved us real money, but the first request each morning eats a 2-second cold start."
