In a microservices system, every service needs to handle retries, timeouts, mutual TLS, and send traces. You could code all that in every service. Or you attach a sidecar proxy (like Envoy) to each service that handles all of that transparently. That network of sidecar proxies is the service mesh. Istio is the most famous one.
