Staged Rollout
ELI5 - The Vibe Check
A staged rollout is releasing your app update to 5% of users first instead of blasting it to everyone at once and hoping nothing's broken. If crash reports spike, you halt the rollout before the other 95% ever see the bad build. It's the mobile equivalent of a canary deployment, just with an app store instead of a load balancer.
Real Talk
Staged rollout is a release strategy, supported natively by Google Play Console and available as a phased release on App Store Connect, that gradually increases the percentage of users receiving an app update over time. If crash rates or negative reviews spike during the early percentage, the rollout can be halted or rolled back before reaching the full user base.
When You'll Hear This
"We start every release at a 10% staged rollout and watch Crashlytics for an hour before increasing it." / "The staged rollout caught a crash-on-launch bug that only affected one specific Android OEM."
