Story Point Inflation
ELI5 - The Vibe Check
Two years ago, a login form was a 3. Now a login form is an 8, not because the work got harder, but because everyone quietly learned that lower estimates get you blamed and higher estimates get you left alone. Story point inflation is the slow, collective, unspoken agreement to pad every estimate a little more than the last, until the numbers stop meaning anything at all.
Real Talk
Story point inflation is the gradual upward drift in relative estimation values over time on a team, typically driven by risk aversion after estimates were previously used punitively or compared unfavorably against actuals. It undermines the core purpose of relative sizing, since velocity metrics become meaningless once the definition of a point keeps shifting.
When You'll Hear This
"We've got serious story point inflation, an 8 today is what a 3 was last year." / "Story point inflation happens the second leadership starts asking why velocity dropped."
